Today we Ethiopians celebrate the Victory of Adwa 122th year. Adwa’s victory is a victory of Africa that encourages the whole African nations to fight their colonizers and lead them to freedom.
This history of our fathers always amazes me. Italians came to colonize Ethiopians, but we fought them back. The war was very interesting. Italians came with all the modern war weapons to scare, to kill, defeat Ethiopians and to reign over our country. Our women and men patriots fought them by sword and spear and became victorious.
One European writer published:
“Ethiopians fought Italians like a crazy person and win the war.”
Jumping up with sword and cut the neck of the Italian who is shooting your people with a tank looks like madness.
To fight Italians, King Minilik and all the patriots walk for six month. EmpressTayitu, his wife was following them to war front with her maids. She encouraged all the patriots and promised them to adopt and raise their children who’ll die on the battle field. Queen Tayitu and her maids wearing their blinds are in the middle of the war. When Italians were attacking Ethiopians and our soldiers were retreating, Tayitu was uncovering her blind and faced them. When the patriots saw the Queen was there, they go back with courage and fought like a lion. Tayitu must be the only woman in history that fought a war.
“ Tayitu was bowing down and prayed
God to give her victory over Italians.
King Minilik had a sword which is
Written on it, “Minilik’s Hope is GOD.” “
That sword is found in the Arat Killo exhibition. I had a chance to see it four times. The king and queen’s dresses, the umbrellas, trousers they wear when the gallop their horses, their mantle decorated with diamonds…etc has been found there.
Our capital city's name Addis Ababa which means new flower. When Empress Tayitu came to Entoto hill, she saw a new flower and again a flat land below the hills. She called the place Addis Ababa. It's the capital city of Ethiopia as well as Africa as a home for AU, UNECA and other huge diplomatic office in Africa.
Yesterday I was invited at the city hall to hear discussion about ADWA’s VICTORY from some historians. They are doing this to pass the exact message of the victory to the youth every year. We lit candle. To cut the big loaf (Difo Dabo) of Ethiopian over the coffee ceremony some representatives invited.
The Addis Ababa City Hall displayed musical drama which was fantastic.
