Last night was special. Last night was the culmination of my campaign to bring the film, Girl Rising, to my city of Portland, OR. Sometimes, when you believe very strongly in something, as I believe in girls' education, it is easy to get discouraged and think that no one is listening. But, last night, as I stood in front of a packed theater to introduce the film, I felt inspired, gratified, and empowered. Yelling really does work!

After my opening remarks, I took my seat and watched this beautiful, inspiring, and important film. The entire theater was silent as we were engaged by the stories of nine girls. Nine very real girls whose stories are meant to bridge a gap between us and them, and to demonstrate a fundamental truth - that girls everywhere want the same things: a chance to be young, and a chance to learn.

Educating girls, "the Girl Effect", is the highest-return investment you can make in breaking the cycle of poverty. When girls get an education, they stay healthier, they delay marriage and childbirth, they make money, which they invest in their families and in their communities. They speak up.

Global change begins with individual action. We can all help girls find their voices and reach their full potential. Volunteer. If you have the means, donate to organizations that support girls’ education. Share your views and experience on Facebook and Twitter. Social media can be a powerful tool. Talk to your friends and family about the power of educating girls.

If you haven't seen Girl Rising, visit http://10x10act.org/girl-rising/ to find a screening in your area, or to bring the film to your city.

Small acts really do create big change.
