Overview:
Through our organization the Centre for Women Empowerment in Technology (CWE-TECH) we are implementing The Binti Shupavu Project in partnership with Daring Girls and Girls Livelihood and Mentorship Initiative (GLAMI). Binti Shupavu was launched in Tanzania with the goal of addressing the significant barriers that secondary school girls aged 12-18 face in staying in school. Currently it is in Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Zambia. In Kenya through CWE-TECH it was initially launched in two schools with two classes in Murang’a County, the project has now expanded to encompass four classes, benefiting a total of 151 girls. The program focuses on equipping these young women with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to overcome obstacles and thrive in their education.
Key Areas of Impact:
Self-Awareness and Self-Identity
The project has empowered girls to develop a strong sense of self-awareness and identity. Through mentorships, and implementation of the Binti Shupavu curriculum, and other activities, participants have gained a deeper understanding of their personal strengths, values, and goals. This increased self-awareness has fostered greater confidence and resilience, helping them to navigate the challenges they face both in and out of school.
Study Skills
Binti Shupavu curriculum has provided girls with essential study skills that have enhanced their academic performance. By learning effective study techniques, time management, and goal-setting strategies, the participants have improved their ability to focus on their studies and achieve better results in their exams.
Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Education
The project has delivered comprehensive SRH education, which is crucial for the well-being and future of these young women. They have learned about their bodies, reproductive rights, and how to make informed decisions regarding their health. This knowledge has not only increased their awareness but also empowered them to take control of their reproductive health and protect themselves from risks.
Assertiveness and Communication
Binti Shupavu has played a significant role in developing the girls' assertiveness and communication skills. Participants have been trained to express their opinions confidently, set boundaries, and advocate for themselves in various situations. This newfound assertiveness has equipped them to handle peer pressure, bullying, and other social challenges they may encounter.
Program Expansion and Reach
Starting with just two classes, the Binti Shupavu Project has now expanded to four classes, with a current reach of 151 girls. This growth reflects the project's success and the increasing demand for such initiatives that support girls' education and empowerment.
Conclusion
The Binti Shupavu Project has had a profound impact on the lives of the girls it serves. By addressing critical areas such as self-awareness, study skills, SRH education, and assertiveness, the program has helped these young women to stay in school, build confidence, and prepare for a brighter future. As the project continues to expand, it holds the promise of transforming even more lives and creating lasting change in the communities it serves. Gratitude to the CWE-TECH mentors: Harriet and Ivy.
