In Cameroon, different mechanisms have been put in place by the different gender activists to mitigate the occurrences of SGBV, wherein, most of these strategies or responses are channeled to support adult victims and little or no attention is paid to sexual violence against children. Violence against children takes several forms and is often perpetrated by persons close to children or their families. Although 1 in 2 children suffer violence in their lifetime, this problem often goes unnoticed, unreported, and unaddressed. if children are aware of their body rights (body autonomy) , safe and unsafe touches, green and red zones, red flags and indicators of potential perpetrators, they will be able to identify signs of violence and speak up to people in their safe cycle. in the child protection event or sessions , i teach kids about their body rights , safe touches and unsafe touches , signs of perpetrators , what they should do in case of violence, we tell them about their safe cycle and who to talk to. using this song ;
THE CHILD PROTECTION SONG
My body belongs to me
It belongs to only me.
It is mine and not yours
My body belongs to Me
If you touch my private part
I will tell.
If you touch my private part
I will tell.
I will tell it to my mummy.
I will tell it to my daddy.
If you touch my private part, I will tell.
while they are singing and dancing (indicating their private parts) they are informing themselves about body autonomy, the rights to their body, what they will do in case of violence and sending out warning to perpetrators.
traditional songs and dance is a cultural tool used by Africans for many centuries to educate, improve morals, and pass down data and information from generation to generation (Akofu & Okwen, 2020). It therefore serves as a unique tool for addressing a wicked problem like VAC and VAW. The concept of using traditional songs and dance for child protection was conceived within a project funded by L’Ambassade de France au Cameroun to eBASE Africa where i was one of the implementing partners and the idea of the child protection song and event came to me code named #DecryptAndFix. The project worked with 100+ community members within stakeholder engagement sessions, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions. It also reviewed evidence on innovations, national policies, national movements and campaigns by CSOs, and cases on SGBV within middle Africa. #DecryptAndFix identified potential new approaches for improving awareness and action on SGBV code named #AwareAndAct.
we have been able to reach to more than 5000 kids with this song and initiative in the North west regions through clubs, radio sessions, child events and schools, we teach them the song and dance as they not only have fun but they are educated as well. i envisage reaching out to not less than 100,000kids with the child protection song and dance before 2025.
