Women all over the world are routinely violated in their human rights throughout their lives, and recognizing women's human rights has not always been a priority. These rights include the freedom from violence, slavery, and discrimination; the right to an education; the right to own property; the right to vote; and the right to a fair and equal wage. Quite sadly that as an African woman, I am deprived of exercising some of these rights simply on the premise of my gender. In some tribes in Nigeria, women are not allowed to own properties, some are victims of child marriage, some are deprived education opportunities etc. I believe that reclaiming women's rights entails more than just providing opportunities to individual women and girls; it also entails changing how countries and communities operate.

It entails changing laws and policies, winning hearts and minds, and putting money into strong women's organizations and movements.
